Votación Temprana: Adelante Launches Early Vote Effort in Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada

This weekend, Adelante, the New Policy Institute's non-partisan campaign which encourages Latinos to vote, will add a new rotation of Spanish-language ads instructing citizens on how to take advantage of early voting opportunities in Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada.

It is estimated that one in three voters in the United States will cast their ballots before November 4. Early voting makes it much easier for people to vote, allowing people to do so on weekends, after work, at malls, grocery stores and other places across the state close and accessible to them. For example, in 2004 in Nevada, more people voted early than voted on Election Day itself. This new phase of Adelante will ensure Spanish-speaking voters in these three states are aware of the early voting option and offer information on the times and places where early voting will be taking place.

Our new "votacion temprana" (early voting) effort will run on those days that early voting is in effect, beginning this Saturday - click here to listen to the ad before it goes up on the air. The ad explains that the government has made it much easier for people to vote, and encourages them to visit our Adelante site, which provides comprehensive and state-specific information, in Spanish and English, about voting laws, absentee and early voting, voter rights, voting deadlines, early vote times and locations and other critical information.

A script of the new ad, "Today," follows below. To listen to the other ads or read the scripts, please visit the Adelante site, www.adelante08.org.

Moving Forward with Adelante: Spanish-language Voter Ed/Mobilzation Effort Now in NM

The New Policy Institute, a non-partisan NDN affiliate, is excited to announce that the Adelante Spanish-language voter education and mobilization effort is picking up steam, with ads going up on the air today on radio stations in New Mexico and on station KRNV in Reno, Nevada.

The ads already have been running in Colorado, the Las Vegas media market and the greater Washington, DC, metropolitan area market, which includes northern Virginia and southern Maryland.  Adelante launched its first ad in Colorado with an extensive buy on Denver (stations KBNO, KXPK, KJMN, and KMXA), Colorado Springs/Pueblo (stations KNKN and KRYE) and Ft. Collins/Greeley (station KGRE). Two days later, the effort expanded into the Las Vegas media market on stations KISF, KWID, KQRT and KRRN. On October 2, Adelante started airing on stations WILC, WACA and WZLZ in the greater DC area and two new ads were released the same day that started airing in all the markets. Ads will continue through November 3.

The media campaign, Adelante, Spanish for "Moving Forward," is a public education campaign that encourages people to vote, explains the process of voting (including early and absentee voting), and targets what is projected to be a large pool of first-time Hispanic voters.

The three ads currently on air include "Acuérdate," ("Remember"), “Siglo” (“Century”) and “Premios” (“Awards”). To listen to the ads and read the scripts in Spanish and English, click here.

Radio advertising is only half of Adelante. The effort also includes a Web site, www.Adelante08.org, which provides comprehensive information, in Spanish and English, about voting laws, absentee and early voting, voter rights, voting deadlines and other critical information. The Web site contains such information about all the states in which radio spots are airing and also will feature information about voting processes in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas.

New Policy Institute Releases "Harnessing the Mobile Revolution" by Tom Kalil

The New Policy Institute is excited to release a compelling new paper, Harnessing the Mobile Revolution, by Tom Kalil.

In recent years, the use of mobile phones and other mobile communications in developing countries has skyrocketed, and Tom takes a look at the power of mobile technologies in addressing some of our most pressing challenges, such as reducing the huge inequities in life expectancy between rich and poor countries, fostering inclusive economic growth, and promoting vibrant democracies.

The New Policy Institute is a non-partisan 501(c)(3) affiliate of NDN.

In the paper, which you can read in its entirety here, Tom urges the next President to promote mobile technologies as a tool to improve global health care outcomes, combat global poverty and strengthen democratic institutions.

"...the next Administration should launch a major new initiative to harness the confluence of new technologies and innovative business models as a key component of its global development agenda. This initiative would be designed to serve as a catalyst for policy reforms in developing countries, promote an increased capacity for innovation by developing country entrepreneurs to meet local needs, and stimulate additional investments by philanthropists, foundations and companies.

Such an initiative could reduce poverty, strengthen democratic institutions, and improve global health outcomes.  It could also help restore some of the damage to America’s international reputation, boost America’s 'soft power,' and position American businesses and workers to benefit from the growth of emerging markets in Africa, Asia, and Latin America...."

As Tom further notes in the paper:

"There is no doubt that mobile communications are having a significant impact on the way Americans live, work and communicate with each other. But the impact is no doubt more keenly felt by the African mother who can call ahead to determine whether a doctor is available to treat her sick child before traveling for hours."

Tom is a chair of the Clinton Global Initiative, the Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Science and Technology at the University of California Berkeley and a former senior Clinton Administration official. To read more about Tom, please click here.
